    Description

    This position is one of seven ORSL chaplains/religious advisors. The Hindu Advisor, a part-time member of ORSL, serves as the advisor to Hindu students. The Hindu Advisor both supports the department mission by bringing breadth and depth of the Hindu tradition to foster the search for meaning, belonging and purpose for all students and also strengthens and sustains the Hindu community through weekly puja services and advising for the student group, Darshana.

    The Hindu Advisor will address the needs of a complex and diverse population of Hindu students, staff, and faculty, in a multicultural environment and enable this diversity to thrive. The Hindu Advisor will have the ability to translate Hindu tradition, culture, and theology into a contemporary context that is both authentic and accessible to nourish students with a wide range of observances, practices, and identities. They will share their ability to study and teach religious, ethical, and historical Hindu texts, and to help others interpret their relevance in the world today.

    This position is a 9 month, termed, 10 hour a week position beginning in October 2018 and ending on June 15th, 2019.

    Primary Position Responsibilities:

    • Religious Services and Retreats: Oversees and promotes participation in student-led weekly pujas, cultivates student leadership of services, provides reflection and educational content, coordinates and lead major festival celebrations, and offers opportunity for regular Temple visits.
    • Pastoral Care and Counseling: Provides religious and personal guidance to students, and serves as a regular pastoral presence for the Wellesley community.
    • Interfaith: Collaborates with other chaplains and staff on interfaith programs and services, serves as Hindu representative in interfaith dialogue, is present to other religious communities on campus and to the broader campus community, offers words of wisdom at university events, and advocates for interests of Hindu campus community as needed.
    • Community-Building: Cultivates a vibrant and supportive campus community; hosts outreach and community-building programs; advises Darshana, Wellesley’s Hindu student organization in their programming and development as leaders, attending Darshana’s meetings and events as needed and providing mentoring and team development opportunities.
    • Administration: Meets weekly with the ORSL team.

    Requirements

    Master of Divinity, Masters of Theological Studies, or other relevant master’s degree or equivalent qualification in religious and spiritual life. A minimum of two to five years experience of related experience. Position will require training and education in pastoral care or counseling; exposure and understanding of the diversity of beliefs and practices within Hinduism as well as cultural competency in both the American Indian and Indian culture; experience of and commitment to working in a multifaith community; experience working in the Hindu community; particularly with young adults in teaching; mentorship, guidance, and advisory roles; exceptional communication skills, including the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a diverse group of people.
