    Job Description:

    The Associate Chaplain for Christian and Interfaith Life will work closely with the other chaplaincy staff, providing religious, programmatic, and educational resources to Christian students and the entire College community. The Christian Chaplain will help to promote interfaith life for all on campus, contributing to its on-going strength and development by serving as: a religious leader, community builder, educator, supervisor, and program coordinator for religion and spirituality. This position works 20 hours per week over 11 months, August through June.

    Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

    • Plan and help lead Christian holidays and services, religious and cultural events, while working closely with the other chaplaincy staff, Christian groups on campus, and individual Carleton faculty, staff, and students.

    • Advise Christian student religious groups, helping them plan for events, programs, or worship.

    • Initiate programs and events for the nurture and education of the Christian community and the campus at large.

    • Work collaboratively with campus constituencies in advocating for the needs of students who identify as religious and help to implement appropriate supports including coordination with dining services, residence life, and other departments and individuals.

    • Advise the Christian Interest House, helping to coordinate applications and programming. 

    • Participate in the Council for Religious Understanding (CRU), a biweekly interfaith dialogue student group.

    • Enhance relationships between the College and the local communities.

    • Counsel students, faculty, and staff as needed and appropriate.

    • Liaise with alumni as needs arise.

    Additional Job Responsibilities: In consultation with the College Chaplain, additional responsibilities may be assigned.

    Describe Supervision Received and Exercised:

    • Meet regularly with the College Chaplain to assess and plan.

    • Meet regularly with the Christian Chaplain's Associates (student peer leaders) and/or the Christian student leadership to assess and plan.

    Required Education/Experience/Skills (supported by job duties):

    • Master's degree in a relevant field, or in the process of acquiring a master’s degree in related field.

    • Experience with evidence of professional preparation for chaplaincy.

    • Demonstrated aptitude for dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.

    • Familiarity with a diverse higher education environment and with developmental issues of young adults.

    • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

    • Ability to work positively with those in the college community regardless of a person’s race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, documentation status, disability, or age.

    • Schedule flexibility to allow for some evening or weekend hours for special events.

    This is an exempt level position. The selected finalist’s salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal pay structure, and our overall compensation package.
