Journal Submission
Unfolding was created to provide practical support to people in the field of chaplaincy. It seeks to draw upon the incredible wealth of knowledge and experience of ACSLHE’s diverse membership. This year, we seek to speak to the current moment with the theme: “Creating Brave Spaces in Turbulent Times.”
For this issue, we seek reflections on programs that create space for people to be brave, practice empathy, and “see” one another’s humanity in times of disagreement. We want to tell stories of programs that create space for insecurity, fear, joy, and creativity. In addition, we seek to uplift alternative modes of ‘voicing’ such as through art, music, or creative movement.
As you reflect on programs you might submit for this issue, here are some additional considerations. We ask that you submit anonymized reflections in a case study format, including a detailed description of the program. As you write, we encourage you to reflect on these four questions:
How did you allow space for emotional complexity?
How did you encourage diverse participation in the space?
Did you uplift alternative modes of response such as through art, music, dance, etc?
How would you assess the event? What did you learn in the process?
We hope to share stories of programs that prompt questions, generate ideas, and inspire other practitioners to try new approaches. Of course, all programming is contextual and ambiguity is an essential part of chaplaincy. To that end, we invite reflections on programs that were successful as well as programs that failed but taught valuable lessons. We seek case studies that ask the reader to ponder unanswered questions.
