The Marianne and E. G. Lassiter Chaplain and Dean of Spiritual Life
Presbyterian College welcomes nominations, inquiries, and applications for the Marianne and E. G. Lassiter Chaplain and Dean of Spiritual Life, one of America’s leading college chaplaincy positions. The Chaplain is an endowed position appointed by the President and serves as a member of the Cabinet. The mission of the Chaplain and chaplaincy program is to build relationships with congregations, Presbyteries, Synods, and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), promote ecumenical, interfaith, and community relations, on and beyond the campus, nurture individual and shared spiritual awareness and growth, encourage service to others through availability to work with PC students and all other College constituencies, and to champion the overall efforts of the College to be the preeminent Presbyterian college in the country. The Chaplain leads a team, including the associate Chaplain, collaborating with the College and other spiritual leaders, to build a vibrant community of faith and an effective Student Volunteer Services Program.
Responsibilities:
Develop and cultivate relationships with pastors, youth pastors, and lay leaders to attract and enroll students to PC from Presbyterian churches, as well as from the larger church:
Serve as an ambassador for the College and as an active participant in the work of Trinity Presbytery and build relationships between the College and the governing bodies of the Presbyterian Church (USA)
- Serve in a “supply pastor” role throughout the Southeast and beyond, preaching at Presbyterian churches
- Serve as the College’s ambassador to the church’s ecumenical partners and interfaith relations
- Collaborate with the Director of Church Relations in developing and cultivating relationships with churches and drive a dramatic expansion of the PC Promise through student recruitment and scholarship agreements
- Assist and facilitate student attendance at worship services in the local community
Provide pastoral care to PC students, staff, and faculty:
- Engage students in the exploration of values, faith, religious and spiritual practice, and discernment of vocational call
- Be attentive to the religious, spiritual, and ethical needs of students and be supportive of religious diversity
- Provide spiritual guidance to students, staff, and faculty
- Plan and coordinate campus spiritual and religious life programming
- Be an active participant in the planning and delivery of Convocation, Baccalaureate, and Commencement activities
- Participate in classroom activities as requested by faculty and engage in other College and community events to build community and connections
- Coordinate memorials, remembrances, and vigils for the community, as needed
- Assist the Dean of Students with supporting students and families in crisis
Participate as a member of the Cabinet:
- Partner with the president, advancement office, and others to raise significant philanthropic funding to meet College objectives, including student scholarships, facility construction and renovation, program creation, and endowment growth
- Coordinate seeking grant support for relevant projects and programs that benefit members of Presbyterian College community and implement funded projects as appropriate
- Manage the Chaplain’s office budget and provide general oversight of the College’s chapel facilities
- Supervise the Associate Chaplain, who coordinates on-campus ministry efforts and directs the Student Volunteer Services program, among other duties
- Oversee efforts of the Associate Chaplain to strengthen and build a robust Student Volunteer Services Program
Qualifications:
- Ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA) required
- Bachelor’s Degree and Seminary Degree required; doctorate preferred
- Previous experience in working in a liberal arts context is preferred; the ability to translate past work to a liberal arts context is required
- Have a minimum of three years of experience working in higher education and/or possess and demonstrate transferrable skills and experience
- Dedication to the educational mission of a private, residential liberal arts college
- Have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice
- Possess and demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff
- Work independently yet collaboratively, provide attention to detail, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines successfully
- Demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
- Excellent organizational, communication, and administrative skills
- Demonstrated ethical and responsible decision making
