    Job Description:


    The Associate University Chaplain has primary responsibility for serving and representing the Jewish community on campus while also representing the Chaplains in various university and community functions. The Associate University Chaplain is responsible for the pastoral care of the Jewish Community at Brown, including religious services, student advising and crisis intervention.  The Associate University Chaplain is also an advocate for multi-faith/cultural understanding and cooperation, and works with the Chaplain of the University, the Associate Chaplains for Christian and Muslim Life, the Religious Life Affiliates and the student Multi-Faith Council to promote multi-faith/multicultural cooperation, tolerance, and understanding.


    The Associate Chaplain of the University for the Jewish Community holds a separate but simultaneous appointment as a Senior Jewish Educator at Brown RISD Hillel. These positions are accepted as concurrent with and contingent upon each other. The Associate University Chaplain proactively nurtures the alliance and tradition of innovative collaboration that exists between OCRL and Brown RISD Hillel. The primary responsibilities of the Brown and the Hillel positions overlap substantially and will often be enacted jointly. The Senior Jewish Educator works with senior Hillel staff to strengthen implementation of Hillel’s program.

    The Brown University Associate Chaplain for the Jewish Community position is 67% time. Brown University envisions that the Associate Chaplain’s Brown responsibilities to require 2.5-3 full days of OCRL engagement and presence; Hillel’s engagements, frequently at evening programming and Shabbat, completes this portfolio.


    Job Qualifications:

    • Rabbinic ordination with strong skills in text study, liturgy and pastoral issues.

    • Knowledge of the Jewish community, locally, nationally, and internationally.

    • Administrative, communication, and social networking skills.

    • Leadership skills for the continued development of a major campus presence in a multi-faith and multicultural environment.

    • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.

    • An approachable, dynamic, energetic, and engaging personality.

    • Outstanding interpersonal skills.

    • Clear and effective verbal and written communications.

    • Skill and comfort in a technology-rich environment, including strong social media acumen.

    • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.

    • Ability to work flexible hours to complete job requirements, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

    • Capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.

    • Prior experience working with college students, with informal/experiential education, and in a pluralistic setting.
