Job Summary |
A ten-month position designed for a recent seminary graduate or its equivalent seeking an intensive practicum in higher education, helping to address the spiritual needs of students across all traditions at Oberlin College. |
Responsibilities |
The Multifaith Chaplain-in-Residence (MCR) resides on campus and is supervised by the Multifaith Chaplain and Director of Sustained Dialogue. The MCR offers 1:1 pastoral care, small group support, and chaplaincy-related programming available to all students. The MCR works closely with the Sustained Dialogue Coordinator and the Dialogue Fellow to support and expand multifaith and interfaith dialogue opportunities. |
Essential Job Functions |
Programming and Student Support (40%)
- Fosters a pluralistic community of students, faculty, and staff, providing educational opportunities in and across multiple faiths
- Provide pastoral/confidential care to students, faculty, and staff in concert with mentor and Multifaith Chaplain
- Facilitates multifaith and interfaith dialogues utilizing proven methods in use at Oberlin College
- Markets opportunities in faith engagement through eNews, social media outlets, and campus communication tools to ensure awareness and access
- Assist in training facilitators for one-off and short-term multifaith dialogues (intergroup and intragroup)
- Meet 1:1 with student participants in learning sessions to understand their dialogue experience on campus where belonging on campus remains a primary goal
- Assist with weekly Leftover gatherings (continuing education sessions) including the meal provision for all student facilitators
- Assist in the supervision of student employees
- Collaborate with A&PS colleagues across the college community in shared programming
- Assist in faith/spirituality related. campus-wide programs
Director Support (35%)
- Receive mentorship in the larger work of dialogue and inter/intra religious engagement
- Provide administrative support as needed
- Oversee Lewis House calendar and building access
- Supervise student interns
- Expand campus marketing approaches both in religious engagement and dialogic initiatives
Office Administration (20%)
- Oversee in-office staff schedule for daily coverage of Lewis House
- Assist with databases and communication that supports pastoral care appointments, key programs, and student-facilitated dialogue offerings
- Assist in student recruitment through residential and student organization opportunities, email communications, campus pitches, etc.
Collaboration (5%)
- Establish peer relations with professional staff in the Center for Intercultural Engagement, Bonner Center, Athletics, Academic Success etc. for opportunities to collaborate.

Required Qualifications |
Bachelor’s Degree |
Desired Qualifications |
A Master’s Degree and/or experience in religious leadership preferred, plus:
- Experience navigating vulnerable territory in human relations and comfortable making appropriate referrals
- Active/attentive listening, offers empathic care
- Attention to hospitality and easing access for participants
- Written and verbal communication; public speaking.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator
- Research skills (includes on-site training and support)
- Organizational skills
- Works independently and as a team member; self-motivated
- Experience in a multi-cultural, multi-religious environment with students, faculty, and staff
- Adjusts to changing priorities
- Valid Driver’s License
- Must pass a criminal background security check conducted by a College agency

Compensation |
Within the ranges established for this position, salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an excellent benefits package. |
