    University Chaplain

    Medford, MA

Tufts University invites nominations and applications for the position of University Chaplain. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and innovative spiritual leader with expertise in multifaith work to build upon existing momentum at the university. Housed in the Office of the President, the next Chaplain will build connections throughout and across Tufts’ multiple campuses to support members of the university community and must possess the character and depth to be an influential voice among students, faculty, and staff.

Founded in 1852 by Universalists as a small liberal arts college, today Tufts educates approximately 11,500 students, almost equally divided between undergraduate and graduate students, across four campuses: Medford/Somerville, downtown Boston, the Fenway area of Boston, and Grafton. Anchored by its Universalist roots, Tufts has a long-held and deeply felt commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across all lines of difference. The University Chaplain plays a pivotal role in the creation and support of a robust multifaith community and is a vital university partner in the development and support of students.

The University Chaplain leads university religious, spiritual, and philosophical life overall and cultivates programs that promote religious diversity and interfaith engagement. Directly linked to the founding mission of Tufts University for education and social justice, since 1905 the University Chaplaincy has been charged with extending Tufts’ broad religious heritage and spirit. The Chaplain’s goal is to support everyone in the Tufts community to experience a rich inner life, dynamic spiritual practice, critical spiritual education, deep ethical reflection, meaningful community, and constructive engagement with pressing issues of public concern. In addition, 2020 will mark the 115th anniversary of the University Chaplaincy, presenting an opportunity to highlight and celebrate its important work and role across the University.
